Gibbons, B. Field Guide to Insects of Britain and Northern Europe
A comprehensive field guide to the insects of Britain and Northern Europe, containing over 700 color photographs.
The first part of the book includes several chapters with general information about insects, photography and classification. It also includes a very helpful illustrated key to the main groups of adult insects, consisting of line drawings and short descriptions, essential to identification. The second and main part of the book contains insect photos and descriptions, by Order, as well as pictures of galls. The book is quite unique in that it shows most insects in their natural surroundings, unlike most other field guides. Entries include a short descriptive paragraph about each species, as well as information on habitat; status and distribution; season; and similar species. I believe that this is an overall good guide and has helped me identify a number of insects, however I'd like somewhat longer descriptions and slightly better quality photographs. The soft-cover books, which I own, contains 320 pages and, despite the fact that it has seen some heavy use, it is holding up well. Contents:
