Welcome to Pelion
My infatuation with Mount Pelion, a verdant peninsula in Central Greece, began in the late 1980's. The effect was, in a sense, magical. The breathtaking mountain cast a powerful, everlasting spell on me, bewitching me straightway. Haunted by its many charms, I have been returning to it year after year, season after season, observing its beauty, absorbing its scents, and delighting in its sounds. For Pelion is, indeed, a living mountain. You can hike the same trails time and again, without ever boring. A new surprise may be waiting behind the next bend. A terrapin leaving a stream of silver bubbles in its wake as it dives to safety; a beetle arduously juggling with a ball of dung; a butterfly flashing its yellow and orange wings as it basks in the sun; a flower of astounding elegance that sprang up overnight... Compelled by some sort of professional interest - I worked as an environmental engineer at the time - I soon began to make a mental note of the striking creatures I chanced on during the course of my expeditions. Then, upon returning to my base, Horton, I would open my field guides and spend several hours trying to identify them, usually to no avail. My aspiration was to collect enough information to post a page or two on the World Wide Web, someday, somehow! Over the years, my itch to make a Web site about the area's flora and fauna gradually became an obsession. Naturally, I had always pictured myself working on it with lots of spare time on my hands. That, of course, would mean winning the lottery or retiring. Alas, the probability of winning the jackpot is one in 13,983,816 and, the way the Greek social security system is going, the odds of becoming a pensioner are much worse. "It's either now or never," I thought to myself, and decided to give it a go. Well, believe it or not, this it... the result of several years' hard work! All the photographs and sketches on this site, unless otherwise noted, are original works. I am aware that they aren't very artistic, but, then again, this isn't a photographic site; their main purpose is to record the existence of the depicted species. Feel free to use them, if you think they're worthwhile, but please drop me a line to let me know. In closing, I would like to assure you that I've made every reasonable effort to eliminate erroneous information. However, although I hate to admit it, I'm rather prone to mistakes. I would, therefore, really appreciate your alerting me to any inaccuracies, solecisms or omissions that may have caught your eye. I would also be grateful to you for helping me classify any species whose identity I have not been able to establish. Please direct any comments or suggestions to Anthony.
