Crocus

Crocus sp.

Crocuses are low i cormous i perennials, with i basal leaves, enclosed in the lower part by several sheaths. Leaves are linear, with a stripe running down the center on the upper surface.

There are one to several flowers per corm, depending on species, each enclosed within one or two i spathes, which envelope the base of the tepal-tube when the flowers are fully developed. The plant's i stamens and i styles and the style-branching can be valuable aids to identification.

The specimens shown here were photographed on the edge of a wooded area, near Agios Lavrendios, Pelion, and were quite abundant in this locality. They were growing in the company of Delphiniums and Hellebores.
