Crocus
Crocus sp.
Crocuses are low cormous perennials, with basal leaves, enclosed in the lower part by several sheaths. Leaves are linear, with a stripe running down the center on the upper surface.
There are one to several flowers per corm, depending on species, each enclosed within one or two spathes, which envelope the base of the tepal-tube when the flowers are fully developed. The plant's stamens and styles and the style-branching can be valuable aids to identification.
The specimens shown here were photographed on the edge of a wooded area, near Agios Lavrendios, Pelion, and were quite abundant in this locality. They were growing in the company of Delphiniums and Hellebores.
