Small White
Pieris rapae
The Small White is one of the commonest European butterflies, found throughout most of the continent, except the far north, to where it normally migrates each summer. It can be seen wherever there are suitable flowers and host plants, frequently becoming a pest in gardens.
Wings are white. Males have one black spot on each forewing, whilst females, such as the one shown here, have two. The wing tips are black. Underside is similar in both sexes, with white forewings and greyish-yellow hindwings. The wingspan ranges between 45 and 55 mm (1 3/4 - 2 1/6 in).
Larvae are green with a pale yellowish line down the back and a row of yellow spots along the side. They feed on cabbage and related plants, but may wander away from the food plant before pupating.
It flies from early spring to late autumn, in 2 or more broods.
