Speckled Wood
Pararge aegeria
Very common butterfly throughout most of Europe, except the far north. Most guides state that there are two distinct color forms: the orange-spotted form, Pararge aegeria aegeria, occurs in southwestern Europe and Italy, while the cream-spotted form, Pararge aegeria tircis occurs elsewhere in Europe.
Its wingspan ranges between 38mm and 44mm (1 1/10 - 1 3/4 in). Wings are dark brown with cream spots, while the undersides are marbled dark and light brown. There are no marked differences between sexes.
It prefers shady woodland and woodland clearings, up to about 1,200 m (3,950 ft), and can be seen flying between early spring and late autumn. Males are territorial and will fiercely defend a spot of sunlight.
Larvae are green, with a darker stripe down the back and paler lines along the sides; they feed on various grasses. Pupae are green and are attached to grass stems.
