Lattice Brown

Kirinia roxelana

Apparently this rather hairy butterfly has a very limited distribution range. It is endemic to the Balkans - Romania, Yugoslavia, F.Y.R.O.M., Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, and, possibly, Cyprus.

Wings are brown, with orange and white markings, and round, dark-brown spots. Undersides are marbled dark and light brown, with touches of orange and white, and are adorned with spectacular black spots, which bear orange and dark brown rings. Sexes are fairly similar, but females tend to be somewhat larger and have more vivid colors.

There are two broods in Greece, flying May to September, in dry, scrubby grassland and old orchards.
