Greek Fauna

"Animals share with us the privilege of having a soul."

i Pythagoras

The photo galleries below contain representative samples of the rich wildlife that abounds the Pelion peninsula.

Arthropods hold a particular fascination for me, so you'll find quite a few photographs of insects, spiders, scorpions, and the like. Over the years, I have managed to capture some interesting close-up shots, which show their extraordinary features in detail and are really worth viewing!

Most of the species have been identified by me, with the aid of my field guides. Although I've tried my hardest to refrain from... erring, I would like to reiterate that I'm not a professional biologist and I am, generally, prone to mistakes, so there may be a few misidentifications.

If you do come across erroneous information or have any suggestions in respect of unidentified species, please drop me an e-mail and let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Amphibians & Reptiles
Take a look at some of the fascinating amphibians and reptiles that can be found in the Pelion region, from spring till mid autumn.

Marginated Tortoise, Testudo marginata
Red-backed Shrike, Lanius collurio
Various Critters
Enjoy some interesting pictures of birds, mammals, and a few odd arthropods, such as scorpions, millipedes, and spiders. This is a shoebox gallery of sorts, containing animals that haven't earned a separate gallery as yet.

Butterflies & Moths
They adorn Mt. Pelion throughout much of the year with their colorful, fluttering flight. Take a closer look at some of the area's truly beautiful butterflies and moths.

Glanville Fritillary, Melitaea cinxia
Rhinoceros Beetle, Oryctes nasicornis
Beetles
Beetles come in all sizes, colors, and shapes, and consist of well over 300,000 known species worldwide. The order contains the bulkiest of all insects, the fist-sized Goliath beetle, but you won't find it in Pelion, so you'll have to settle for the species I've photographed.

Stink Bugs & Kin
They resemble the shields held by valiant knights, but they emit foul odors when disturbed. No wonder they're commonly known as Shield or Stink Bugs. Anyway, take a close look at them without suffering the consequences.

Italian Stink Bug, Graphosoma italicum
Praying Mantis, Mantis religiosa
Insectarium
I love insects, because they come in all sorts of interesting alien forms. Even the Klingons, an extra-terrestrial race of warriors, who have probably derived their name from the fact that they have a habit of clinging onto the SS Enterprise, look handsome compared to most of the species in this gallery.
